The
Ocean of Everything
The Voyage Home After Love and Loss
G. D. Laumonier

The Voyage
The Ocean of Everything is not a novel, but a voyage into some of the deepest questions of human existence.
What do we actually mean by God, even the God we don’t believe in? Has science made God unnecessary, or has our growing understanding of the universe only deepened the mystery? What is consciousness? Is there a purpose to life? Why do we suffer? What happens when we die? And why does love seem to matter so much?
These are deep waters, but the book is intended to be as enjoyable as it is challenging. Moving through science, philosophy, psychology and faith, it brings different ways of understanding existence into conversation, making unexpected connections and questioning some familiar assumptions along the way.
It is a book for anyone who has loved and lost, whether through bereavement or the end of a relationship. Anyone who has known what it is to feel lost and desperate, anyone who has looked at suffering, their own or somebody else’s, and wondered why. And for those moments when the questions we can usually keep at a comfortable distance suddenly become our own.
A sea voyage provides the book’s central metaphor for that journey through life. It's an ancient image, sometimes calm, often rough, with storms to weather and horizons we cannot yet see beyond.
There are no claims to certainty. The invitation is simply to come aboard, explore the possibilities and decide for yourself what you find reasonable.
We may navigate by different stars and reach different conclusions, but what matters is that we remain willing to make the voyage, to wonder whether, somewhere beyond the horizon, it is all just the way home.

The Author
G. D. Laumonier’s life has followed a varied course through the Royal Navy, the legal profession, education and Christian ministry.
As a teacher, he taught Philosophy of Religion at A (Advanced) Level preparing students for university and encouraging them to approach difficult questions with curiosity and an open mind.
Long before the classroom, however, there was the sea. Joining the Royal Navy as a teenager took him far beyond the world in which he had grown up and brought experiences that would stay with him for life, one in particular that served as a springboard to his own spiritual journey and provides the imagery for the book. After a stint of 12 years in the legal profession he became a teacher and school chaplain, each offering a different perspective on people and the questions that shape a human life.
Those different worlds eventually came together in The Ocean of Everything. Although personal experiences appear throughout its pages, this is not an autobiography. They are there to illustrate the questions that are encountered not only in books, but in the lives we actually live.
Laumonier makes no claim to have found all the answers. He remains, as he describes himself in the book, a fellow traveller, still questioning, still learning and still enjoying the voyage.

Continuing the Adventure
“Certainty often closes doors whereas faith at least keeps them ajar.”
